My dad was diagnosed with cancer while I was out in Vegas– this time it’s a lot more serious.  He battled cancer a few years back and knocked it out.  This time it’s back, in the esophagus.  We were sitting around on Memorial Day weekend and he mentioned that he couldn’t swallow too well and [...]

Z You at the Deaf Seniors of America Conference

I’m here in Las Vegas hanging with 1,800 Deaf senior citizens.  And what a cool group they are to hang out with!  I can’t help myself– I find that I get into conversations with them and want to hear their stories of growing up and where they worked at.  One guy worked at Coke for [...]

Free booklets to teach kids to read

I came across this page "Hubbards Cupboard" and it has so many awesome resources to print and use in teaching a wide range of subjects.

I print them out changing the layout to be 4 pages per printed page, to save paper and make it a cute mini book. We go through the pages, reading the words, and he colors the pages. Then we staple it into a booklet and show/read it to everyone we can.

This is exactly what I was feeling like… Continue

Reading and Writing

This is such an exciting time for us. My deaf 4 year old is reading and writing! We knew he could sight read a few words and he was even writing some of his favorite words, like his name and Goodyear ;)

On Tuesday night we were trying to get him to pray for dinner. He didn't want to, as usual, so I thought it would be funny to write it down and ask him again.

Who
Pray?

He looked at the note, we told him what it said (since Who and Pray aren't in his reading vocab).
Then I wrote his name. He s… Continue

Hi All-
I am not sure if any of the members here are located in the Metro area but I couldn't keep this info all to myself...
My husband and I just took our little boy to tour a school called Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES) in Washington DC. It's on Galludet University campus and it is FREE!!! Federally funded. We will be enrolling our son James at the end of August. It is awesome!! The public school system in our County (Charles) is horribly undereducated with severe disabilities… Continue
