Judy Myers Inspires Deaf Mom

Judy Myers is my new idol.  This “Old Lady” is my new inspiration each day, because she’s got me all fired up about barefooting again.  Here I was last year, all sad and feeling like my best years were behind me– and then I learned about this 66-year-old gal who was skimming along the water like [...]

Deaf Mom’s Goal for 2010–Yes, I’m Gonna Barefoot Again.

I turned 44 last August and I wasn’t too happy about it.  Forty four.  It had an omnious ring to it–one step closer to “middle age.”  I was feeling pretty much like my best years were behind me and I reflected on the years past.  Why-oh-why didn’t I appreciate my youth when I had it?  Why [...]

I’m a Loser Mom

It’s official.  I’m a Loser Mom. That’s right.  I’ve joined the 2nd Loser Mom contest, thanks to Devra Renner, who made me realize that I really couldn’t continue to hide my spare tire under those sexy Lanz of Salzburg nightgowns. The contest is a timely one, as I’ve been so tired of carrying around 60 pounds [...]

Deaf Mom’s Good Stuff of 2009

I was going to wrap up 2009 with a round up of posts before it turned 12:01, but I was a little busy fake-cleaning my house for the last-minute New Year’s Eve party.  Better late than never.  But before I amuse you with my posts, take a look at the fun we had saying goodbye [...]

My son sure could use one of these! He's in band, and it's my first deaf kid in band with hearing aids, so I'm thinking when we go to marching band, that would be EXTREMELY helpful!

The FM fight

In the time since Julia’s hearing loss was diagnosed I’ve learned much about assistive technology. Here in PA, the county provides her with an FM System that transmits the teacher’s voice directly to her hearing aids. The teacher wears a necklace-type transmitter that they simply power ON to use. It’s handy in noisy classrooms or when they sing songs with background music. It really helps her. Unfortunately, a great deal of my newfound knowledge pertains to the resistance/inability of preschool… Continue

Free booklets to teach kids to read

I came across this page "Hubbards Cupboard" and it has so many awesome resources to print and use in teaching a wide range of subjects.

I print them out changing the layout to be 4 pages per printed page, to save paper and make it a cute mini book. We go through the pages, reading the words, and he colors the pages. Then we staple it into a booklet and show/read it to everyone we can.

This is exactly what I was feeling like… Continue

Reading and Writing

This is such an exciting time for us. My deaf 4 year old is reading and writing! We knew he could sight read a few words and he was even writing some of his favorite words, like his name and Goodyear ;)

On Tuesday night we were trying to get him to pray for dinner. He didn't want to, as usual, so I thought it would be funny to write it down and ask him again.

Who
Pray?

He looked at the note, we told him what it said (since Who and Pray aren't in his reading vocab).
Then I wrote his name. He s… Continue
