Lucky Day Free booklets to teach kids to read

I came across this page "Hubbards Cupboard" and it has so many awesome resources to print and use in teaching a wide range of subjects. I print them out changing the layout to be 4 pages per printed page, to save paper and make it a cute mini book. We go through the pages, reading the words, and he colors the pages. Then we staple it into a booklet and show/read it to everyone we can. This is exactly what I was feeling like… Continue

Lucky Day Reading and Writing

This is such an exciting time for us. My deaf 4 year old is reading and writing! We knew he could sight read a few words and he was even writing some of his favorite words, like his name and Goodyear ;) On Tuesday night we were trying to get him to pray for dinner. He didn't want to, as usual, so I thought it would be funny to write it down and ask him again. Who Pray? He looked at the note, we told him what it said (since Who and Pray aren't in his reading vocab). Then I wrote his name. He s… Continue

Hi All- I am not sure if any of the members here are located in the Metro area but I couldn't keep this info all to myself... My husband and I just took our little boy to tour a school called Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES) in Washington DC. It's on Galludet University campus and it is FREE!!! Federally funded. We will be enrolling our son James at the end of August. It is awesome!! The public school system in our County (Charles) is horribly undereducated with severe disabilities… Continue

Brenda Elliott Any advice - assistive devices for our church?

Many years ago the Sertoma club donated equipment for the hard-of-hearing to use at church. Some time ago they become defunct. I have recently asked if the church would revisit procuring similar equipment. The Sertoma club would not donate any money to the church, when the church staff inquired. Now a sound person (hearing, who to my knowledge has little to no understanding or experience w/ hearing loss) has ordered something, but no one can explain to me what it is... The church staff member sa… Continue

Brenda Elliott Hello!

I'd like to introduce myself briefly - I have four children, two of whom were born hard-of-hearing (HH)- the oldest (12) and the youngest (16 mos.). Prior to my oldest child's birth, there was no history of congenital hearing loss (or otherwise). Our next two children were born hearing, and our fourth child was also born with a hearing loss. Okay, now we know it's genetic! :-) My kids who are HH are both boys, and praise God we have new born hearing screenings in our state! They've both worn hea… Continue

Lucky Day Pre-school with an interpreter?

We've been having our son go to speech 4 times a week at a school where he can't go to school because he is too young. Then 2x a week I take him to a VE pre-K and he does PE or plays outside with the other kids. This VE Pre-K has a CODA and great teachers, but the reason that most kids are there is that they have developmental or behavioral issues. So we're thinking of moving our son to a pre-school program with developmentally normal kids with an interpreter. He's going to be 4 this month and… Continue

Carly Joey's Story

Hi Everyone, My name is Carly I found this great website through the facebook group and think that it is great. I have a 3 year old son Joey who is hearing impaired, Joey had meningites at 3 weeks old. Joey's hearing loss was not diagnosed until after his first birthday after I went back and forth with the doctors begging them to please do a hearing test especially since I would shake a rattle in Joey's ear and get no reaction; the doctors kept tellinng me that he was fine and maybe just a littl… Continue

DebCny Enjoying this group website...

I want to say thanks to the powers that be that have put this website/group together. So, thanks! I've been having fun looking around this site - enjoying the photos and other members comments. I spent a little time playing around and setting up my own page here, and added a few photo's. I have to say, pretty user-friendly! If I did anything "wrong" someone please let me know... cause I was just pushing buttons for a while there. =) I actually started a blog fairly recently (last summer)... ca… Continue

Michelle My Daughter is Gifted

Hi All, I know you must be thinking sure her daughter is gifted, doesn't every Mother claim that? Please give me time to explain and I think you will agree. The first thing you notice about my daughter, Maisie, is her smile. It's as bright as sunshine and full of mischief and fun. The next thing you'd notice is the little box that seems to float near her head just behind her right ear. That tiny little box is actually a BAHA, short for bone anchored hearing aid, and it usually makes people tak… Continue

Michelle You Can't See Deaf

Hi All, So we have a big event taking place in the Symes house in the next week. Exciting and nerve wracking news all at the same time. Our little daughter, Maisie, will be having a "nail put in her head" (her words) next week. And really, it's not that far from the truth, except for the fact that it's a screw and not a nail. I'll get to that in a second..... You can't imagine the joy we felt the day our little girl was born. We adored our boys, and from the minute we found out we were having… Continue

Lucky Day How to help people that won't help themselves

We met this little 5 year old 2 weeks ago. She is deaf and in a home daycare situation. She hasn't had any early intervention, she doesn't even have hearing aids. The family has medicaid, they just don't know how to get basic needs met. I feel mad and powerless about this situation. If she could be brought to our county she would be the 1 more child they need to split the k-5 class. If she could get hearing aids she could have a chance at catching up on language. Her family doesn't want to send… Continue

Lucky Day Thank goodness for the "delete" key

I'm grateful for the delete key and the 5 minute window to edit my posts. I'm struggling with the choices we're facing. Our son is 3 and according to the AV therapist we visited, his sign vocab is closer to age 5. Awesome! But we are considering a CI because he isn't making appropriate progress. He's super smart, he just can't hear well enough. I'm so grateful that we have used the sign from the beginning. We have had so many beautiful times each day, that I thanked God for it. When he says his… Continue
