Free booklets to teach kids to read

I came across this page "Hubbards Cupboard" and it has so many awesome resources to print and use in teaching a wide range of subjects. I print them out changing the layout to be 4 pages per printed page, to save paper and make it a cute mini book. We go through the pages, reading the words, and he colors the pages. Then we staple it into a booklet and show/read it to everyone we can. This is exactly what I was feeling like… Continue

Reading and Writing

This is such an exciting time for us. My deaf 4 year old is reading and writing! We knew he could sight read a few words and he was even writing some of his favorite words, like his name and Goodyear ;) On Tuesday night we were trying to get him to pray for dinner. He didn't want to, as usual, so I thought it would be funny to write it down and ask him again. Who Pray? He looked at the note, we told him what it said (since Who and Pray aren't in his reading vocab). Then I wrote his name. He s… Continue

Pre-school with an interpreter?

We've been having our son go to speech 4 times a week at a school where he can't go to school because he is too young. Then 2x a week I take him to a VE pre-K and he does PE or plays outside with the other kids. This VE Pre-K has a CODA and great teachers, but the reason that most kids are there is that they have developmental or behavioral issues. So we're thinking of moving our son to a pre-school program with developmentally normal kids with an interpreter. He's going to be 4 this month and… Continue

How to help people that won't help themselves

We met this little 5 year old 2 weeks ago. She is deaf and in a home daycare situation. She hasn't had any early intervention, she doesn't even have hearing aids. The family has medicaid, they just don't know how to get basic needs met. I feel mad and powerless about this situation. If she could be brought to our county she would be the 1 more child they need to split the k-5 class. If she could get hearing aids she could have a chance at catching up on language. Her family doesn't want to send… Continue

Thank goodness for the "delete" key

I'm grateful for the delete key and the 5 minute window to edit my posts. I'm struggling with the choices we're facing. Our son is 3 and according to the AV therapist we visited, his sign vocab is closer to age 5. Awesome! But we are considering a CI because he isn't making appropriate progress. He's super smart, he just can't hear well enough. I'm so grateful that we have used the sign from the beginning. We have had so many beautiful times each day, that I thanked God for it. When he says his… Continue

Finding middle ground

Karen, Thanks for creating this site. I feel like it's more private than a facebook group but more aesthetically friendly than a listserve. I know 3 families in my city with implanted 3 year olds. The local program for the deaf has several kids in it with implants also. The children we know all have different situations. None of the young children were implanted at 12 months. We really believe in the ASL, both as a culture and as an academic aid. The other 3 three year olds are in an oral prog… Continue

So we're thinking about getting our son implanted...

My son was diagnosed as a bilateral moderate hearing loss when he was 10 months old. We figured he'd be able to learn speech now that he was getting amplification and we embraced ASL. We have been amazed at how awesome it has been for our family to be able to learn and communicate with ASL. 18 months later his left ear was severe profound and the right was mod-severe. At each point we were told he wasn't a candidate. In more recent discussions the audiologists would ask if he was progressing. I… Continue
